This one-day course, offered in French through the UNIL/EPFL Continuing Education, is aimed at anyone who is interested, but especially secondary school teachers in history, geography and language, as well as journalists.

This course will introduce participants to the digital humanities, and address how to use digital tools and computational methods to model, extract and process their content in the context of secondary school education. A certificate of participation will be issued at the end of the training.

Goals:

  • Become familiar with the field of digital humanities: origins, definitions and issues
  • Understand the fundamental concepts of modeling
  • Grasp the opportunities and challenges of digital history
  • Stimulate computational thinking in education
  • Discover a practical application via the construction of a search engine for historical newspapers as part of the Impresso project – Media Monitoring of the Past
  • Learn to integrate the Impresso tool into educational activities

This course is organized by the dhCenter; the Language and Information Sciences Section, and the Institute of Archeology and Antiquity of the University of Lausanne (UNIL); the Digital Humanities Laboratory of the EPFL College of Humanities. The steering committee is comprised of dhCenter members Michael Piotrowski, Maud Ehrmann, and Matteo Romanello.

The class will be held on the UNIL/EPFL campus from 9:00-17:00 on February 17th, 2021.
