Open Day: Bilder der Schweiz Online / Time Machine EU

The online portal “Bilder der Schweiz Online” (“Pictures of Switzerland Online”), an initiative of the Chair of Modern Art History at the University of Zurich (UZH) and the Swiss Art Research Infrastructure (SARI), is organizing an Open Day in collaboration with the Time Machine EU project.

The goal of this event is for enthusiasts history, digital heritage and digital humanities to get together and brainstorm, discuss current projects, and inspire future research. The conference, to be held via Zoom, can be accessed by emailing stephanie.santschi(at)uzh(dot)ch to request a link.

The “Bilder” portal aims to support research using historical images of Switzerland from topographical art and photography from the 18th to early 20th centuries. The project uses digital humanities semantic methods to answer scientific questions and communicate important museum and library collections in a way that is accessible to the public.

The Time Machine network, which comprises some 14,000 institutions across Europe, uses “big data of the past” to build a large-scale simulator mapping 2000 years of European history. Using digital humanities methods, the project is transforming kilometers of museum and archival materials as well as digital collections  to create a “huge distributed digital information system mapping the European social, cultural and geographical evolution across time.”
