“Digital Labor”: Online talk with Antonio Casilli and Paola Tubaro

On November 25th, the Bibliothèques municipales de la Ville de Genève will host an online talk on the the theme of “Digital labor: le travail du clic – Les petites mains cachées des géants numériques” (“The work of clicking – The hidden little hands of digital giants”).

The French-language event will feature speakers Paola Tubaro, a social network sociologist at the the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), and Antonio Casilli, a professor of sociology at Télécom Paris.

The speakers will argue that the idea that robots, algorithms, and artificial intelligence mean that the digital universe will function increasingly without human help is incorrect. Specifically, they will talk about “click farms”, or the “millions of small hands in flesh and blood [that] provide, behind the scenes and often in calamitous conditions, the work which puts the spirit in the machines.”

Those interested in participating in this event are asked to register by contacting animations.bmu@ville-ge.ch.

The event will also be broadcast life on the Facebook page of the Bibliothèques municipales de la Ville de Genève.
