Job UniBasel: DH technical assistant (50%)

The Department of Ancient Civilizations of the University of Basel invites applications for a position as DH technical assistant, tenable for two years from August 1, 2021 (or by arrangement), as part of the SNSF-funded research project ‘Urban Biographies of the Roman and Late Antique Worlds: Antinoopolis and Heracleopolis in Egypt, c. 100 – c. 650 CE’ led by Prof. Dr. Sabine Huebner.


The Digital Humanities Technical Assistant will work closely together with the team of historians and archaeologists and construct and update the project’s website on the homepage of the University of Basel. She/he will also devise the online platform for the collection, organization, and visualization of data for the project (papyrological, epigraphic, numismatic, and archaeological materials paired with geographic coordinates) compatible with existing online databases (e.g.,,, Towards the end of the project, the data should be made available on an accredited open access digital repository. She/he will also work on the construction of an online exhibition on education and culture in the Roman city of Antinoopolis.


The ideal candidate has both profound programming and design skills and a background in the humanities. She/he should have proven skills in one of the common database systems, be proficient with HTML, CSS, have a strong command in frontend programming (e.g. JavaScript and/or jQuery), a good understanding of GIS software (e.g. ArchGIS or preferably QGIS) and the ability to manage SQL data analysis, experience with PHP or comparable scripting language for dynamic database connection, good knowledge with Typo3-based content management systems, preferably EasyWeb experience, proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, experience in preparing scientific content for a broader audience, and experience in social media management.
