Latest Educause Horizon Report outlines key edtech trends

On March 2nd, American nonprofit Educause announced the publication of the 2020 Educause Horizon Report: Teaching and Learning Edition. Drawing on the expertise of international leaders in higher education, the report profiles a range of educational technologies (edtech) and their impacts on teaching and learning.

Of particular interest for digital humanities researchers is the section on Emerging Technologies & Practices, which covers machine learning, analytics for student success, extended reality (XR) technologies and, notably, the acceleration of open educational resources.

Indeed, as Jean-François Van de Poël points out a Medium review from last year, Educause’s preceding 2018 NMC Horizon Report predicted that the “proliferation of open educational resources” would drive edtech adoption in the midterm. In his post, Van de Poël, coordinator of RISET (Interfaculty Education and Technology Support Network) at the University of Lausanne, also provides in-depth commentary on the publication’s identified challenges to edtech adoption.

In the 2020 report, the Educause authors have notably moved away from the time-to-adoption model, in favor of outlining interesting possible future scenarios for higher education through the year 2030.
