#ASAnumerica – Classics and digital technologies at UNIL

#ASAnumerica was born in 2019, from the encounter between three researchers in the Institut d’Archéologie et des Sciences de l’Antiquité (ASA) of the University of Lausanne. Their researches span from the 3D modelling of the Baalshamîn temple in Palmyra (Dr. Patrick M. Michel), to the data visualisation network of verse inscriptions in the Roman world (PhD student Dylan Bovet), through the digital edition of a Byzantine manuscript of the Iliad (PhD student Ariane Jambé).

This fusion has put forward common methods, practices and reflexions raised by new technologies in the respective study projects and, more broadly, in the field of classics. All three of them pay careful attention to envision new technologies with a critical eye, sharpened by classical studies.

#ASAnumerica’s purpose is threefold:

  • We support digital projects and respond to digital needs in resources and guidance for whomever interested within ASA
  • We promote networking among ASA members and beyond, and foster collaboration with various units at the UNIL and the EPFL through the dhCenter, and its working group involved with Classics led by Dr. Matteo Romanello. We also endeavour to make projects more visible for academics as well as for the general public
  • We encourage and develop critical and humanistic thinking in the use and application of digital technologies. We are particularly sensitized to issues of good practice, digital sobriety, ethical responsibility and ecological sustainability

In view of this last point, #ASAnumerica develops an approach that may be defined as ‘digital ecology’.
