UNIGE: Dating apps and the privatization of love

The University of Geneva is hosting a French-language talk, which will also be made available by videoconference, by sociologist Marie Bergström on “Applications de rencontres et privatisation de l’amour” (“Dating apps and the privatization of love”).

Bergström, of France’s Institut National d’Etudes Démographiques (INED), will present the history and changes that have come with the rise of online dating, including criticisms surrounding the ‘commodification’ of love. But she proposes an alternative reading of these apps’ impact as reflecting a ‘privatization’ of meeting.

Bergström’s presentation will be based on an empirical investigation that led to her book, “Les nouvelles lois de l’amour. Sexualité, couple et rencontres au temps du numérique” (“The new laws of love: Sexuality, the couple and romantic encounters in the digital age”), and presents its main conclusions.

The videoconference link will be made available soon via the UNIGE website.
