AI & Cities at AMLD

Co-organized by the dhCenter UNIL-EPFL, this track will offer a discussion platform for both urban theorists and urban practitioners. By integrating the urban perspectives of researchers, private companies and the public sector, we want to foster a dialogue centered around the real challenges facing cities around the globe today.

By 2050, 66 percent of the world population will live in urban areas. This urbanization and the increasing densification of metropolitan areas will lead to various challenges. The emergence of the Smart Cities paradigm aims at using technological advances to equip cities around the globe with the tools to tackle issues like transportation, housing, flood protection and many more. Within this framework, AI is a key factor: from empowering self-driving fleets to predicting dangerous gas leaks, autonomous and self-learning systems will become more and more important to urban life. Beyond city operations, AI will also be key to urban society: To understand collective human behaviors in urban contexts is of crucial importance for implementing social and planning policies that will reduce the risk of conflicts and foster cooperation between individuals, groups and communities.
