In the February issue of the journal Nature, Leiden University Medical Center professor Barend Mons argues that 5% of all research funds should go toward making research data FAIR: findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable.
Mons co-leads the GO FAIR initiative for implementing the FAIR data principles (findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable). In his opinion piece, he estimates that most research data go unpublished. However, he believes that the infrastructure, expertise, and metadata needed to make these data accessible require more resources than science is willing to provide.
Mons therefore calls for 5% of research funds to be put toward data stewardship. Such investment, he argues, is not just a practical way to optimize resources spent on research: it’s also an ethical duty.
